A recent visit by family gave me a rare opportunity to go for a good walk in the nearby countryside.

It was a hot day so I opted for a largely wooded route, although the path skirts around fields at times, offering fine views over the valley.

I hardly saw another soul on the walk with it being a weekday afternoon but I did have a chance encounter with someone quite unexpected: a fox.

Not your bedraggled urban fox, this. A fine specimen and given the hour quite possibly a vixen hunting for food for its young.

I watched as the fox pounced on a patch of shrubs, presumably containing some tasty morsel. It continued walking on the path towards me for a while before slinking off into the safety of the woods. A memorable sighting on a calming country walk.

He looks like a kind of sort of friendly fox, Clio lending a helping hand for Coombe Mill
