The One Man and His Sprog family

This blog is the online home to the One Man and His Sprog family. The blog is written by me, Dan (ShireDad), a digital manager turned stay-at-home dad and husband to the wonderful ShireMum. Most important of all though is toddler Tilly, who changed our lives forever when she arrived in 2013.

Becoming a stay-at-home dad

I made the fairly monumental step of quitting my job in summer 2014 to become a full-time stay-at-home dad. We completely changed our family routine, taking Tilly out of nursery and with ShireMum returning to work full time. Much of this blog is about getting to grips with a world of toddler issues, parenting and often being the only dad in playgroup.

Moving to the countryside

We used to live in London but have been moving into the shires as family life loomed. Following the arrival of Tilly we made the move to the Chiltern Hills which is both a rural area and prime London commuterbelt. We’re exploring our new area, finding the best for family living and local producers.

Preparing for school and back to work

Three years into my role as a Stay-at-Home Dad, daughter Tilly is preparing to begin school in autumn 2017.

At the same time I’m launching my own freelance business Daniel Atkinson Photography, providing interior and architectural photography services across Buckinghamshire and the home counties.

Hi Dan. Have just read and enjoyed your piece in the Saturday Times. Wondered if you had heard about the Parents As First Teachers programme which is based in Amersham. There’s a short article about it in the new edition of Families Chiltern, on page 4. It would be great if you would like to write something for the new web-site and even better to meet you and Tilly at one of the monthly meetings at Chestnut Lane School. We do have a few other Dads and Grandads who come from time to time, though I can’t pretend there’s a crowd! However we do stress it is Parents as First Teachers, not just Mothers as ………………..

Hi Janice! I did read about the programme in Families Chiltern with interest (your inclusive parenting name is very welcome). I’ll drop you a line by email to see how we can work together. Dan
